Well here is my 1st attempt at a hat.  I got the pattern for free on Ravelry here:  Slouchy Beehive Hat by Flora Cheung

I made a few modifications which I added to the Ravelry website.  If your interested I wrote them all up and posted over there (my user name on Ravelry is sixlegged).  I had to modify it to fit a 12 year old girl.  I also listed the yarn and needles used over there. 🙂
